Professional Identity

My ultimate vision is to see myself in a Human Resource managerial position. Currently, I am working for Air Canada as a Bi-lingual Customer Service Agent. I would like to establish myself well within the company and eventually obtain a position in my field of study which is Human Resources. There are numerous opportunities available in Air Canada as a Human Resource personnel, which I believe I could obtain over time and experience within the company. After completing me probation, I will be eligible to apply for internal positions as they become available in Human Resource Department. My probation will end in the next four months, thus, in the next year I see myself working at an entry level human resource position for Air Canada. By five years, I see myself to have moved up to a mid-level position with CHRP Certification under my belt. I see myself working for Air Canada because of the benefits I am offered which is to be able to fly at discounted rates. Therefore, working in the Human Resource department will be beneficial for my career and will also have an attractive feature present for me which will makes me more passionate to work for Air Canada.

Similarly, to make myself prominent in the professional field, I have incorporated using marketing tools such as Linked In, my professional resume, and creative resume. My resume would be the main marketing tool as it will be crafted to include all the essential information that is required for the job/position I am applying for. LinkedIn would be the second main marking tool which will also include relevant information about my experiences and strengths, however, it is slightly more general compared to a resume. LinkedIn reaches a larger audience as it is a web-based tool in which I can apply for a group of jobs/positions at a click of a button whereas my resume when paired with a cover letter will only apply to a specific job. Currently, I have all three mentioned (professional resume, creative resume and Linked In) but the most iterated is my Linked In profile which is thoroughly updated as people are constantly viewing my profile and the network connections seems to grow continuously. Also, my professional resume is used more than my creative resume because it is an orthodox method of applying for jobs where those hiring can be aware of my skills, knowledge, and abilities and other attributes.

Below is my professional and creative resume which shows evidence and provides a comparison of why one is used more than the other:

As you can and compare above, both these resumes have a different approach of conveying the message to the employer therefore, it is more safe to be applying with professional resume as it is more of a classic approach.

Also, my Linked In shows my progress throughout the years without having to keep a certain page limit like resume which provides potential employers to know me and my experience in more depth.

Over the years, I have acquired professional experiences from three primary companies. Air Canada, my current employer, has provided me with adequate training and experience to work for an airline company (for example, performing baggage tracing, dealing with passenger complaints regarding issues such as missed flights, missing connections, delayed flights, and checking passengers in and assist to their queries, meet the flights as they arrive guiding them towards their connections). Working as a Customer Service Agent has also provided me with the professional experience of sales and being able to provide good service to the customers of Air Canada. The customer service related to aviation industry is very different than the retail service I have been used to. This experience has definitely made me more confident and firm when communicating my message. The challenge in this job is getting overwhelmed and intimidated by those who end up yelling and being abrasive but similarly this has been an opportunity for greatest growth as well where I can stay calm and just convey my message.  There is no culture of trying to please passengers with customer service rather the norm is to just provide them with best option available and move on to the next passenger. To be able to achieve my goal, I have to adapt rapidly into the lifestyle of Air Canada culture and make sure I fit well within the organization. Once my managers see that I have potential, I can achieve the status of permanent and apply for internal positions in the Human Resource Department.

The second professional experience I have acquired is by working as a Sales Associate at TJX Canada, Marshalls. Working for TJX Canada has provided me with the experience of dealing with cash, customer service and boost sales. This company has given me adequate experience and training for working for a retain organization. This is one of the longest experience on my resume and shows stability and commitment present which is seen a positive factor when companies and managers are going through resumes. As a sales associate, I would like to say that I have reached the maximum growth where the next step is to move up in the company but it is not my career goal as it diverts me from my goal of landing a job in my field. Therefore, the constant challenge is to keep myself content with my current position and stay focused on my goal and not get lured into another career opportunity.

The third professional experience I have gained is by working for Boiler Inspection and Insurance company as an Underwriting Intern. By working for this company, I have the professional experience in preparing presentation and documenting productivity. I was trained to prepare PowerPoint presentations for risk management presentations and documenting company productivity by using graphs and other analytical methods. In terms of professional experience, this job adds the most weight because I was given the opportunity to work in a professional workplace which made me more focused towards my goal of finding a job in Human Resource. This position was only challenging due to its long commute to Downtown Toronto. I really appreciated the lifestyle of working a 9 to 5 job with weekends off where I started being more focused in my education and aimed to finish my degree in order to pursue a job in my field.

All the relative evidence regarding my professional experience can be viewed above in my professional resume and also in my Linked In profile.

The industry project is adding to my professional identity because it is enabling me to work on a live project, thus being able to have real life experience of how it will be to working on a project in professional world. In this project, we are focusing on how Living Arts Centre can improve their present and sales within the community. Me and my time, using the competency of agility and adaptability have developed 3 objectives the organization should be focusing on and how different departments will work together in achieving this goal together. After my graduation, I can use this project in my resume and interviews to show those who are interviewing me that I have gained experience at Sheridan College and able to apply the learnt material. Therefore, industry project adds on to my professional career due to the nature of this assignment of focusing on a current problem. Additionally, the top 2 presentations will have an opportunity to present in front of the manager who can then incorporate the objectives into their goals which is quite honorable.
