Undergraduate Competencies

In CLP 1, I was introduced to all 7 undergraduate competencies where the first one was critical thinking and problem solving. I did have problem solving skills but with ways of searching on the web and getting myself familiar with them required some workshops in class and assistance from librarian. Also, extending my knowledge gained in first year courses towards third and fourth and year courses enhanced my problem-solving skills. In my CLP 1, I considered myself fairly knowledgeable about problem solve but critical thinking skills were definitely acquired in my past 2 years where I learned how to ask questions in order to obtain a better conclusion or alternatives based on the information provided. Below in the chart you can see the specific skills I have acquired along with evidence of how my critical thinking and problem-solving skills were put to use and further developed.

Undergraduate Competencies Self-Assessment
Section 1: Critical thinking and problem solving

During CLP 1, I used to think I am agile and adaptable but working in a new group for every course made me realize I had over estimated myself but the group work in each course made me become more adaptable. I was not agile at all but with the flipped model, Sheridan had made sure I become agile in order to do well in my pre-work and post work for each class. For this competency, my only evidence is my constant contact with new group members and the requirements of each professor and work with them. Agility was heavily developed when I had enrolled in 8 courses last semester with a job as well and succeeded in it with no grade lower than B.

Section 2: Agility and adaptability
Section 3: Curiosity and Imagination

In CLP 1, I did think I was imaginative but not curious enough to expand on the imaginative ideas but as I enrolled in creativity class I learned how to work on imagination through brainstorming which also made me more curious and ask questions to myself. This definitely taught me how to learn better because as I was more curious about certain tasks such as how to balance my accounting debit and credit statements made me practice them more and become better. In my creativity class, there had been many activities where I had to leave my comfort zone such as the Solve IT tool where the last part of coming up with the solution is to create a scene for it so one can see themselves doing it and I am good at writing in detail so I felt good about my piece but little did I know I would be asked to share it. I was not comfortable with it but as it was part of the assignment, I had to share it. This is just one evidence of how my curiosity lead to a solution and towards leaving my comfort zone. Also, within in the Solve it! tool I had to brainstorm and expand and go in different directions to come up with wild ideas which made me think that I have improved in this competency.

Section 4: effective oral and written communication
Section 5: Initiative and Entrepreneurship

From CLP 1 to now, I can confidently stay this is one competency where I have personally grown the most. In the past, I would not finish my assignments which consisted of lack of focus, no faith within myself that I will not do good but now I am able to complete my tasks and submit my assignments of which the result is positive which drives me to keep my focus on that course to maintain that grade. I still do not take enough risks I believe because I leave everything for last minute which does not give me enough time to take risks. I do not set backs make me slack anymore, such as my current training at Air Canada is causing a disruption in completing my tasks at school because it is a full-time training but I am not letting myself give up. I am completing my assignments even if they are late to obtain some grade ather than a zero. so this is the initiative I have learned through out the years from CLP 1 is to never give up.

Since CLP 1, I have been good at listening to others but unlike earlier, now I also give back my feedback in order to do better in giving feedbacks which are motivational and critical. Moreover, it was because of CLP 1 and the MBIT test where I learned that I can give up at certain times and that realization made me fight with myself to not give up which made me dealing with my interpersonal conflicts in a very positive way. Such example, as mentioned above is not giving up on myself to achieve a grade in assignments if they are late because I have been pre-occupied at the training. I tend to remain positive and think of good results rather that demeaning and negative results to bring my morale down. My trick now is setting a goal for myself which is to graduate this semester and keep thinking about achieving it in order to keep my focus when dealing with interpersonal conflicts. I still have to learn how to motivate other because I tend to get influenced by their ideas or methodology and forget about mine even if it might be better. I still have to work on this competency because I would like to say I have not worked hard enough on this competency. Due to immense group work in each class, I am able to adapt to each group but I would like to lead. I am able to do when it is utmost necessary such as when my group member did not show up for their presentation but I want to learn on how to do it regularly.

Section 6: Collaboration and Leadership
Section 7: Accessing and Analyzing Information

I have been writing formal reports ever since I remember going to high school but the standards and expectation increase as I proceeded further to university and now Sheridan College. Therefore, I was fairly well in my CLP 1 but due to third and fourth year courses, different papers such as research papers of 60 pages or more, consulting papers, creating employee evaluation documents have me made me more efficient in library research and finding the most accurate and applicable information through different sources. I would also like to say that APA citations is embedded in my core where I am aware that any information I take from any source needed to be referenced as it needs the credits.
